Less than 50% of Americans are for Hillary, so why should Merkel stick her neck out? She will be smart to stay out of commenting on this election where we have two of the worst candidates.

Any candidate compared to Trump is a GOOD candidate. Any comment that could diminish a Trump victory should be more than Welcome.

A time of some danger, but no time to go off half-cocked. A foreign head-of-state can provoke resentment by poking their nose into another country's politics. Obama made that mistake in the case of the British EU referendum. Merkel would probably not do any good if she spoke up.

You don't have to be GOOD to be better than Trump, so Hillary fits the bill.

Well, yes, it is but f Merkel, or any foreign leader of an allied nation, were to come out forcefully for one particular candidate and that candidate were to lose the election, they would run the risk of damaging their relationship with the new leader and that leader's country. This is especially true of a megalomaniacal narcissist like Trump.

The thing is, Chris, there's no "up side" for Merkel in this. If she comes out for Hillary it wouldn't guarantee her victory and it would go hard for her, for Germany and for NATO should Trump win. Her best option is to declare her willingness to work with whoever becomes our next president.
