The fact is that we'll never know, will we? You apparently wish to take solace in the fact that "nothing could have been done anyway". It certainly appears that DOD offered military support and believed they could get assets there in time to make a difference. But the most troubling aspect of this is that it doesn't appear that we even tried to get help in there.
