They're not Birchers. They're segregationists. The AIP was George Wallace's party and CA is the only state where they're still active.

Indeed.

California voters have had No Party Preference (NPP) as an option since 1999 (if I remember correctly) and before that Decline to State as options when they register to vote.

John Schmitz (a Bircher) was one of them and their presidential candidate in '72. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_G._Schmitz

A hlf million votes isn't chicken feed. People were confused by the word Independence in the party's name. It was an error that could have been and should have been anticipated and the registration form footnoted.

It wasn't an error.
The document lists all the parties, including the American Independent Party. Then, it has the option to not declare any party.

If registering to vote is that confusing for an individual then I have to wonder how he/she manages to vote for propositions. Those are intentionally written to be confusing. 😏

Spoken like a true voter suppression Republican.

You realize that what you said is practically the verbatim argument that they use to justify their initiatives such as the photo ID requirements?

It strikes me thst an any application form that can generate a half million identical errors is a poorly designed application.
