I suspect you're thinking of Sen. Robert Byrd who in his early life was indeed in the Klan but ultimately disavowed them and acted with honor and dignity, contributing much good to the country for the balance of his life.
Since Trump is actively seeking the support of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and neo-Confederates right now, the two situations aren't even close to comparable. Trump may or may not be a racist but it's unmistakably clear that he is openly soliciting the support of the worst of the worst racists and racist organizations in the country. As far as I'm concerned, this is a distinction without a difference. Would it matter, for instance, if Hitler was himself not an anti-Semite?
Quote:
In 1997, Byrd told an interviewer he would encourage young people to become involved in politics but also warned, "Be sure you avoid the Ku Klux Klan. Don't get that albatross around your neck. Once you've made that mistake, you inhibit your operations in the political arena."[22] In his last autobiography, Byrd explained that he was a KKK member because he "was sorely afflicted with tunnel vision — a jejune and immature outlook — seeing only what I wanted to see because I thought the Klan could provide an outlet for my talents and ambitions."[23] Byrd also said, in 2005, "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."

Robert Byrd, check. Hillbilly said he was KKK 'before he died,' which implies he adopted his KKKism late, which is exactly backwards. Hillbilly informed by unreliable source, I fear....

I didn't mean as of late, I meant he was kkk before and was dead now. I didn't follow it... kinda hard to stay on top of things raising 22 month twin girls and a 5 month old baby boy ALONE without a babysitter 24/7. The computer is just about not an option at all. I ''glance at FB notifications once in a while when my phone 'pings' but other than that I seldom have the time.
And I wasn't aware of whatever is going on here about trump until after voting. Still not sure exactly what yall are talking about, yet. Maybe if my wife is off saturday I can look deeper.

I believe this country generally forgives people for their thoughts and non-criminal actions in their youth for the most part. Robert Byrd went on to become a Senator for almost 50 years. Would David Duke win any political position? End of comparison.
Wasn't Hillary a Republican and the GOP has forgiven her for it?

Hills, you're busy, got that. But we'll steer you straight if you let us.
Quick summary: Someone says to Trump (not exact quotes, this is summary) 'David Duke just endorsed you what do you think of that?'
Trump says 'Who's David Duke? Never heard of him.' That's just a lie, but the telling question is why did he want to tell it? He either wanted time to ponder maybe taking Duke's support, or else he wanted people to think he was pondering it.
Add to that the news above (message 1941): "[James]Edwards talked to the real estate mogul's eldest son and campaign surrogate, Donald Trump, Jr., for his "pro-white" radio show, "The Political Cesspool." Previous guests on the show have included Neo-Nazis, Holocaust deniers, and Ku Klux Klan leaders."
Trump is playing footsie with white supremacists. With bare feet.
