After seeing and reading about all the wackos who wanted do go down in a blaze of glory, I think the state and Federal law enforcement handled this thing in almost perfect fashion.

Let all the initial enthusiasm drain away, let all the fools see they are neither welcomed nor even desired, let them get cold...then remove the leadership, surgically kill the leader with a death wish, and wait out the stragglers in a boring staredown that also lets them know they will be readily dispatched if they so desire.

The biggest danger in such response is the group melting down and either drinking Kool-Aid or setting fire to their own domicile because they're not getting the Armageddon they planned as final result prior to -- metaphorically -- "getting cold."

But suicide takes commitment and these assholes were just bullies.

Agreed. Originally I was clamoring (silently) for their power, heat and lines of communication two be cut off. On hind sight, I am glad that they were not and they were given limited freedom to go into town, spread their message, etc. In the end they were marginalized and shown to be bullies and utter fools to the rest of the country.

The state and the Feds did spend considerable amount of resources and do hope that these Y'allqueda's will face the full extent of the law and spend serious time behind bars. Please no plea bargaining for these yahoo's.

Next time I drive to Portland, I plan to go through Burns and see what all this brouhaha was all about.

I have been doing this for the last 20+ years and enjoy taking the back roads. There are a lot of picturesque two lane roads that connect US 395 to I-5 and I take these if I go to PDX from the Tahoe area. Usually drive my Chevy Silverado (Off-road package) or Ford Expedition (gas guzzler extraordinaire) in the winter.
