You are really well read...I read You Can't Go Home Again and Look Homeward,Angel back in 1985 but did not know much about Wolfe's feelings about race. I happened to turn to Wolfe because he was mentioned in the novel Sophie's Choice by William Stryon. That is a great book also.

I have yet to read Of Time And The River. I think he was influenced by Proust.

I need to start reading Faulkner.

In college I took an Abnormal Psychology class and the textbook mention Wolfe as possibly having a personality disorder.

I think the word is really the most awful of words because when used against the target it implies that you are sub-human or in the American context property and not a person but a thing, and there is no equivalent that can be directed against a white person here because whites were not enslaved based on their skin color.

People who hate "political correctness" may be opining for the days when casual use of the word in the white community was accepted.

I watched an old Shirley Temple Movie on youtube last night. I think it was made in 1936 and it was called "Dimples". She was an amazing child star that's for sure and I doubt she ever was a racist at any time in her life. However that movie had many scenes in it that would make you cringe. The parts that the black actors got were caricatures of racist sterotypes. And then there were the dancing scenes with the one little white girl dancing with a whole bunch of white people all in blackface. As a white person I was embarrassed to watch this shit. And that wasn't even considered racist all all back in those days. At least not by white people.

After watching something like that I really appreciate a little political correctness.
