What you're seeing, Chris, is no different than the Alternative fuer Deutschland Party or France's National Front, particularly in light of Paris, San Bernardino and rampant Muslim immigration to Europe. Support for Trump and the AfD hovers at about 10% of the national electorate. It's just that Trump represents a faction of one of our two national parties and not one of many parties in a parliamentary system.

I think both of our countries have about 10% racists, bigots and xenophobes, but our media loves controversy (and the eyeballs it brings) and covering Trump's rants and ridiculousness is money in the bank for CNN, MSNBC, etc. Rest assured, this assclown will not be America's next President any more than Frauke Petry will be your next Bundeskanzler.

Some Americans, yes, but to simply attribute these fears to "Americans" suggests that most or even all Americans fear Muslims. This is demonstrably false.

Of course there are Americans who believe, or are at least receptive to, what Trump is spoon feeding them. So what? There are lots of stupid, even horrendous, things that many of us believe. The demagogues who prey upon such people do us no favors. At the risk of invoking Godwin, there was man in Germany who was "just saying out loud" what many of his countrymen believed. Look where that got us.

Trump is a profoundly evil human being who is capitalizing on people's worst basic instincts: their racism, xenophobia and paranoia. Every word he utters draws us ever closer to the edge of the abyss and gives the propaganda of our enemies a veneer of legitimacy that makes it increasingly easy for them to recruit people to their cause.

Thanks for your comment, sir. But the situation is alarming, anyway. Extreme polarization everywhere. I hope that the Front National will not be actually victorious next Sunday. And I hope that the AFD will not remain as successful as they are currently.

It reminds me a bit of the 1980 chancellor campaign. Franz Josef Strauss (a bit like Trump) vs. Helmut Schmidt (democrat like Hillary). Strauss had actually never a real chance to become chancellor.
