Pepper spray would have involved a lot less potential harm to the kid but it would have been excessive too.

Yes, I know but that doesn't change the fact that pepper spray would have been a better option.

The kid apparently was pretty far out of line but it was all verbal. She was no threat to anyone's safety and wasn't seen as such.

Since she apparently refused to get out of her chair, calling the School Resource Officer was probably the right thing to do. Some kind of physical compulsion was probably the only way to remove her but the deputy flipped out on her. One second he's talking calmly to her and the next he's got her in a choke hold and is throwing her to the floor.

Or maybe he didn't flip. Maybe he can inflict that level of violence on a non-threatening child without feeling any emotion at all. That's the scarier prospect.

It really is a tough situation to handle as an adult. I'm not sure what I would have done.

Oh, I got no problem with the girl (and her classmates) being shown who's in charge. Actually, I see it as a good thing. That being said, at this point it looks like the officers actions may have been excessive. We'll know more in the coming days.

Watch the other students in the classroom. They don't seem to be upset or overly excited about what is going on.

Any thoughts about why that may be?

Perhaps they knew what to expect?
