Thanks for expanding my view of the situation, JJ!

Brietbart's reporting, alas, is too partisan to be believed, but they had some interesting photos.

RT says 100's of students, MSNBC says 'about a hundred.' Which do you believe--the news outlet that keeps having journalists resign over the organization's ethics, or the one that will fire journalists who violate ethics?

Good panel discussion on MSNBC--hope you listened to it.

I'll see your comment about Brietbart with the same comment about Melissa Harris Perry.

I find it hard to trust any of the popular/well known news sources.

People will say anything to get on TV cameras and there is an abundance of them around covering a sensational story. Here we are dealing with youngsters and as such their opinions are suspect to me (age, wisdom and judgement?).

Now if I can see some written letters to the school admin or to editors in support of Officer Slam, I would be a bit more open minded. Briebart and RT? Gimme a break.

The Problem:

Quote:
What makes students misbehave? What is the appropriate punishment? For years, educators have grappled with how to keep students and staff safe from fights and extreme disruptions, often combating disrespectfulness with policies often solve the immediate problems, but often also lead to to long-term academic failure.

...

"The waste of so much human potential is not only unacceptable in Oakland, but across the country," then-superintendent Tony Smith said when announcing the plan.
(emphasis added)

The idea is to support and restore the student's ability to function in the academic environment. The idea is that the school's job is to help and educate every student they can, not just the nice and easy ones. That's What the Fuck.

The concept of any Restorative Justice theory is to remove then restore rights and privileges through a codified behavioral schema.

i.e., "you do this, we'll do that."

I'm fine with this, it's how a kid gets the car keys or cell phone back at home.

But it starts with compliance.

In our case, based in three levels of prior non-compliance?

1. Drag the kid out of the chair.
2. Remove her from the classroom.
3. Tell her what the schema is.
4. If she doesn't comply, she doesn't come back.

The choices are all hers.

We would plan PTA meetings weeks in advance - send emails, flyers, etc. with time/date and agenda.

4 or 5 parents would show up.

They don't want to know. It's easier.

So, how many of your own kid's PTA meetings did you go to?

As the most intelligent person here, you seem unable to ascertain there might be a reason we don't have children.

I have learned you are not an amusing curmudgeon, but vindictive and self centered.

Technology is wonderful. One click - poof! You no longer exist.
