Agree with first sentence, and with much else you say. But the problem is, the confronting you're talking about risks a big increase in the "social and political turmoil." I can think of nothing more likely to actually get Donald Trump as president than a big push for "gun removal."

I'm not very keen on 'confronting,' in general. It stokes up the opposition.

This post is pathetically dishonest and entirely devoid of intellectual content. All it does is display your prejudices and your unwillingness or inability to think critically.

You're not even able to see that it doesn't matter in the slightest what the shooter's political or religious beliefs are. All that matters is that we live in a country where any nutcase with any assortment of beliefs and fantasies can get all the weapons he wants, usually legally, and then kill and kill and kill until he himself is killed. This is the world you gun nuts helped to create and which you fervently wish to preserve.

You have an epidemic when a disease grows exponentially because nothing limits it's spread. Looking at the data, we do have an increase, but not an epidemic. This is a graph based on data from the Mother Jones database.

You will see a few more incidents, and definitely more fatalities, in the last 10 years. In the period 1982-1995, average fatalities a year are 10.5; for 2006-2015, that average jumps to 27.
Here's the thing about that chart. While the raw number of mass shootings in the US didn't change all that much from year to year, the lethality of these attacks spiked massively in 2004. Can anyone think of something that occurred in 2004?

Never mind. I'll Tell you. It's the repeal of the Assault Weapon Ban. The law was enacted in 1994 and immediately there was a drop in lethality. It stayed low too, except for 1999, and then shot up in 2004 and has been high pretty much ever since.

No, it's MORE accurate to report suicides and accidents.

Because it fully reflects the impact on our society of the irresponsible proliferation of guns in our society.
