All that aside, this country is too large and too diverse to be managed effectively with a Euro style system - advocates of such a system would be better served to make their case State by State. Those efforts have already met with some success.

First of all...too large geographically or too large in population? Because if you're saying there are too many people you're just flat out wrong. US population is 300 million. EU population is 500 million. And in fact...one of the primary problems with this country is the organization. Our educational system is fucked because it's controlled by the States and the municipalities within them. Our asses are being kicked by countries who have centralized educational systems where all children get the same quality of education no matter which part of that country they live in. The same amount of money is spent on poor kids as is spent on rich kids. The teacher quality is comparable throughout these countries. The autonomy of the States is killing this country.

This country is too diverse? It's no more diverse than Spain or France, and only slightly more diverse than the rest of Western Europe. It's considerably less diverse than Canada. Says a recent Pew study.
