This is kind of a parallel post to what Pete wrote in the thread about Kent State. He abhors the act, but seeks to add perspective.
There is no excuse for murdering or attempting to murder countless innocent people in order to make a point. Nevertheless, I wonder what it is like to be Muslim in America.
Consider a couple of possibilities. The suspect was an agent of the jihad, and his task was to become a naturalized citizen of the US so that he would have a better chance to cause whatever havoc he could when his order came.
or
He came here with hopes and a belief that the American way would provide him with a better life. He became disenchanted or felt like an outcast because of his religion. That made him susceptible to the recruiting pitch of the radical Islamists.
BTW, the fact that he confessed after being Mirandized makes McCain look even sillier, doesn't it? (If that is even possible)
Regards,
D-Ray

Except to counter that the previous bad guy bomber (underwear bomber??) allegedly was talking until he was Mirandized. Not trying to imply people shouldn't know their rights, but that it's a double-edged sword.

He stopped talking for a while but he started up again. We brought his family over from Nigeria and, through a combination of family pressure and good interrogation techniques, he's been talking ever since.
The point is, people have rights under the Miranda decision whether we tell them they do or not. Failing to tell them can result in a blown case.

That is part of the point/question. Do these guys actually have this right or are they classified in some other way? Lots of debate there and I don't really know the arguments either way.

Why would they not? The law applies to anyone subject to US law, not just citizens and certainly not just citizens from birth. It's really very simple.

The "debate" is between people who are accurately describing US law and those who aren't. Truth and falsity are not "both sides of the issue".

This myth that muslims suffer humiliation in this country is just that - a myth. My wife was shopping on 9/11, she was alone in one aisle when this man dressed as a muslim took hold of her shopping cart and pushed her backward down the length of the aisle. (I assume he was muslim as why would a non-muslim dress that way).
We have a woman who obtained a MD driver's license allowing her to drive wearing her bourka on the grounds of religious freedom.
There is a rather large mosque built not far from us - try building a church in any muslim country, even some that allow it place all sorts of restrictions on the building's appearance.
They built a very large "home" across RR97 from us allegedly as a home for the elderly.
This recent incident amply demonstrates the foolishness of allowing them into the country as there is no way of separating the sleepers from those truly seeking the "good life".

Thanks for the perspective
It's got to be tough for any foreigner in the US, almost by definition. I would guess being a heathen makes it even worse (lol). But seriously it would. Even if you were an atheist you'd be more at home, particularly if you from a formerly Christian country, but even that is relative.
It's a great thing, that many of the terrorists sent here as sleepers never answer their call. What a country.
On the flip side, and this speaks to Robs post too, they spew their racist hatred in mosques all over the place. Even if the immigrants don't do anything but attend they tolerate it, to their shame. So if a young Islamic gentleman gets his papers, comes over here to settle in and do good, then becomes feeling isolated because of the differences (and we can seem cold even to Europeans), when he turns to his culture mates, the people or at least culture he knows, he stands a good chance of - bad things.
I'm not giving them a pass, oh no, you know me, I'm fine with summary execution by military tribunals! But we need to come to the root of the problem, or it can't be addressed, and there are quite a few Islamic folks in the world.

The incident with your wife is despicable. Too bad someone didn't set him straight the old fashioned way.
My dad has worked with many muslim engineering consultants. His experience? 'They lie!'

So, do all Muslims lie or is it just the Muslims who are engineering consultants?
