Like California or not, California leads the nation as the #1 economy by far by GDP. #2 Texas will be hit this year by fallen oil prices. California's economy is greater than the sum of the bottom 23 to 24 states, starting with South Carolina or Kentucky:

California's economy accounts for almost 12% of the National GDP, and is currently the 7th largest WORLD economy. We export food, technology, film, aircraft parts, car parts, etc. to the tune of 10% of the nation's exports, leading to a smaller trade imbalance.

California's ports are the gateway to imported products (demanded by US consumers) and provide initial transportation for distribution to the rest of the United States.
The vast majority of California's 38 million residents work or have worked hard for what they have, what they do, what they produce, and what they will have. The vast majority of us work within the laws, rules, and governance that we've had. The vast majority of us, with, in spite of, or despite the screwups, pitfalls, and stupidity of our elected officials, have been able to work, live well, and do more than a lot of other states. That's just fact. With only 12% of the population of the US, we're damn well holding our own, and in fact carrying our load in the economy. I hope your state is doing the same.
Without us, the US would likely be in constant recession, and not be world leaders in a number of technologies and industries.
Hate our politics, sure, I hate it too and plenty of other states politics, but Californians work their butts off, reap the rewards of that hard work, and keep moving forward. That's where we look, that's where we go, and that's where others are going to have to follow, IMHO.
Happy you love where you live, and all that goes with it. I'm quite happy to live in California almost all of my life, and have benefitted greatly from that experience.
