Gunter Grass R.I.P

Known for "The Tin Drum" and other works, called the concience of Germany, recently revealed he was a drafted youth member of the Waffen SS.

He'll be missed but, hopefully, his passing will prompt people to dust off his books, read them again and pass them along. The Western world seems to be sliding into the abyss again.

John

PS: I think I'll watch The Tin Drum tonight in his honor.

Yes, it is. It always helps to have the original author work on the screenplay. And the kid who played Oskar was amazing!

FYI, it's on Hulu as are a great many of the excellent films in the "Criterion Collection".

I love his Tin Drum. Best post war novel and one of the best German movies EVER!

Waffen SS? He was 17! After this (unacceptable) fauxpas he became a lively social democrat and an Integrity Icon!

The only other Grass book I recall reading was The Flounder. I can remember very little about it. It was a long, long time ago, nearly 50 years but I do remember liking it.
