i remember reading one of Primo Levi's books. In it he told the story of when he once found some water contained in a pipe in the camp. He shared this with the man next to him. Another man saw this and was so angry because he did not also get the water but Primo Levi had not noticed him there and considered he was doing a good thing even sharing it in the first place. The man would not talk to him after that.
It's easy to think we would act well in these situations, but I doubt any of us here have every gone through even a tenth of the hardship that these people did. Where a few sips of water can cause a lifelong hatred for someone.
