Well it worked out with all this sanction regime...the Russian nationalists will have to eventually invest their money in Russia.

Medvedev for sometime has been pushing them to do this.

Doesn't that mostly depend on who's doing the analysis of which President, and the party affiliation of each. To hear the GOP tell it over the past 6 years...Obama controls everything personally, including who the IRS decides is worth of keeping their tax-free status. I understand that's not "state security" related, so please...it's just an example.

Accusations of who's finger is on what in this country has never been about anything but politics since the founding.

Reading through the lines Nemtsov appears to me to be very naive.

The break up of the USSR let loose a struggle for important sectors
of the Russian economy. If you were a serious player you needed your own personal
body guards because the streets were vicious. The men who made it to the
top are survivors of many battles.

Second Issue: Many Russians are very passionate about Ukraine. Russia has absorbed about 800,000 Ukrainians in the post Maidan era. Plus there are
many crazy Russian nationalists in the land.

Nemtsov must be aware of the milieu.

He is about to denounce corruption. He has adopted a sympathetic Ukrainian
stance. He has a very young Ukrainian girl friend. And the day
before he is about to speak on corruption, and Ukraine, he is strolling on the
street with his girl friend without any protection.

And it has been reported in the Western press that Nemtsov had expressed a fear that Putin would have him killed. If true, and if he was serious, it's another reason why walking around Moscow in the middle of the night was a really bad idea.

Nemtsov had become a very marginal figure in Russian politics. His party holds no seats in the Duma and Nemtsov himself enjoyed a whopping 1% favorability rating among Russians.

However: "It is because people like them could be influential out of proportion to the number of books they sold or the votes they received."

Remember when that imbecile GWB said he could look into Putins eyes and tell he was a "good guy"? I was watching a Russian coworker as he read the article on his lunch break. He lifted his head, looked at me and said;

"Dees Boosh is an idiot. Putin is not GOOD GUY, Putin is KGB. Eef we listen to dees Boosh we will all be fuck."

Prophetic words, IMO........
