Boehner & McConnel about to be skewered
Al-Shabaab threatens malls in Canada, UK, U.S. in new video
I don't know what this threat means realistically, the group could just be bragging. But it is sure to screw up Bohner/McConnel strategy of holding DHS funding hostage over Obama's immigration EO. WH should be arranging for a welcome back party.

And the new GOP majority House and Senate just completed 50 days of governance.

The threat is just as real as the threats that revealed themselves in France and Denmark. There are al Qaeda/ISIS sleeper cells all over the West, including here. All that needs to happen is for the right one to get activated with the right plan.
There's nothing to putting together a small arms type assault like the ones at Charlie Hebdo (al Qaeda) the school in Beslan, Russia (Chechens), the mall in Nairobi, Kenya (al Shabaab, not coincidentally) or even simultaneous multiple targets like Mumbai, India (Lashkar-e-Taiba). They involve only a few people and readily available ordinance and, as we've seen, relatively small losses of life have a huge impact on the population.

The very essence of terrorism and how easily these can be carried out. Yet is there enough vigilance here or in Europe and are we wasting our resources fighting "terrorism" instead of trying to protect our self from terrorists. I know this is not an easy answer.

It's impossible to immunize a country, especially one as large and diverse as this one, from terrorist attacks. Actually, they happen here all the time it's just that, since the perpetrators are white Christians, they're not identified as what they are.
The George W. Bush Justice Department was tasked with doing a study of the risks of domestic terrorism in the United States. It was released in 2009 during the Obama Presidency. The conclusion of the report was that the US was at significantly greater risk from home-grown right wing terror, particularly from the "Sovereign Citizen Movement"... think Bundy Ranch... and radical "Christianists", than from any other threat, either internal or external.
The Republicans went ballistic and the report was withdrawn and the committee investigating domestic terror was dissolved.
Holder's trying to relaunch the investigation with predictable results.

McConnell has caved and agreed to offer the DHS funding as a separate bill and address the immigration issue in separate legislation. The Senate held a cloture vote of 98 to 2 in favor of bringing the standalone DHS bill to the floor.
So far, Boehner has been mum.

Boehner needs to act tough before he caves in, and he will cave in despite the wingnuts. A whole lot of DHS employees are going to be pissed since they will miss out on a paid furlough.

I dunno Raj, who needs to have to slog through a mountain of backlogged work in addition doing their regular jobs after this nonsense is over. Keep in mind that most of them are deemed essential and so they'll be showing up to work anyway sans a paycheck. That's no way to run a business much less the government.
Imagine if you handed IOUs to your employees for a couple pay periods. Moral would suffer and your best and brightest would start thinking of greener pastures.

Bob did not mean to disparage the employees. I plain forgot to include a smilie and I intended the comment to be sarcastic, directed at Boehner.
for all you know, some of the damage has already been done since DHS has been preparing for a shut down.
I think we need to have a law against government shutdowns or a line item veto.
