That is what I was trying to get at, if the cops back off and let them leave the area where they were creating danger to the public and then deal with them in a better/safer spot like using tire strips on I-5 or whatever works. It is not like they would have gotten away no matter what.

In general, if you back off, the hostage dies: they've achieved what they want with them and they're dead weight.

I would err in trying to save that life before than dismissing their right to their life.

There is no safe place on the stretch of I5 that they were near. Homes and businesses from stockton to Lodi, not to mention the freeway is tore up and there are construction workers along the way.

They didn't have a lot of options.

I haven't driven I-5 since 1982 or so. I have lived in Sac and Modesto both but before 1967.
No possible way would I have ever done what the Stockton cops did, right or wrong. Guess I shouldn't be a cop.

What I see is a vehicle surrounded and blocked by the cops, picture taken from a helicopter overhead and the cops using the vehicle for target practice. Reportedly the criminals started to shoot at the police and the police returned fire. End of story?
