It is really weird my home theater set up is just basically two loud front Klipsch Synergy SF-1s and and a thrift store center B&W and two small Energy satellites I can barely hear. But if the movie plays a classic rock track on the soundtrack the sound is so different and more lifelike that I can get on my conventional stereo. I assume that is what classic rock would sound through a really good PA system or an old 1940s movie theater amp. I have not tried to reproduce that in my mancave with my other systems...probably could not do it. Does anyone else notice this? My home theater AVR is old does not have HDMI.

Tell me what amp you have.
And do you notice same with a 2-channel source, though the digital amp? I assume not, and I think this means the guys who mixed the movie soundtrack did some 'magic.'

Yeah, if you turn the back channels uo enough, you sometimes notice sounds coming from the side/back. Big whoop.
But, if I found a swell amp for $7.00 I might try it again. The wires i ran under the floor are still there....

For years I've just been using a Vizio sound bar and a little sub-woofer on this TV, and really holding off on using the Infinities in the purpose for which they were originally designed. So I guess now I have no excuse.
I've been waiting to find a HDMI AV amp for cheap so now I guess I'll try it. I'm thinking no wires under the rug though. A year or so ago I found a pair of Advent wireless speaks with the x-mitter unit and everything...also at the GW. I think the speaks and the x-mitter were 7 or 8 bucks. I've run them and for cheap plastic boxes they don't sound too bad...I would think certainly good enough for rear channel effects on a home theater system. So I'll probably use those.
So it's a "swell" amp, you think? I know a lot of the vintage guys really lust after the big old Pioneer receivers, but I'm pretty sure this Pioneer is early 2000's gear so I wasn't sure. When I'm lusting over vintage amplification it's typically Yamaha, Carver and Brit gear...mostly Quad amps and pre-amps.

It is a Yamaha HTR-5760 I have the digital toslink going from the blu-ray to the AVR. I have it on the the Pro-Logic ll setting when I play movies.
It is actually the closing songs they play during the credits of Madmen. I will have to try a cd through the system on the stereo setting.
I scored an Onkyo AVR with HDMI in/outs 2 years ago but I have not hooked it up since it will not fit the cabinet I have right now.

Most AVR's won't fit in the media cabinet we have at our other place. This Pioneer seems a bit shorter than most so I'm hopeful.

Can the receiver create surround-mode sound from a two-channel input?

Don't actually know how good an amp it is, was basically admiring the 'score' price. It's defiantly fun to check stuff out when such opportunities come along....
I don't have wires under the rug, I have them under the floor. Drill holes by baseboard, run wires along basement ceiling. Cut a little flap in the carpet to get access to floor, this can be glued down again at a future point to hide the hole if desired.
Wireless speakers are much less bother I'm sure.

I want to try blu-ray audio...I guess an AVR amp with HDMI connections and a blu-ray player would be all you need...plus the blu ray disk of course.
