Havin waited to make a comment on the events. Not wanting to jump in until a medical exam or more then conjecture in the news.
My observation so far, the shooting needs to be investigated by the Justice Department. I believe that at first a bit of stonewalling and how dare you question the police was going on. But now the events have morphed into a confrontation over the inequities in justice in our society. The powerlessness certain groups feel in our unequal justice system.
I know from my experiences in how some law enforcement make a judgment on appearances. Learned to keep my mouth shut and eyes down. Now should I have to just because of long hair beard and drive a van? In a perfect world no, but this one is a long way from one.
Now should there be the unrest and confrontation. I think the media being there and 24/7 coverage is adding fuel to the unrest. But I also think with the military surplus gear being given to local PD this too has escalated the events to a new level. By the officials thinking we have the power to force our will on the citizens. No talking and seeing the other point of views.
I also think being cynical person, that the equipment is being preposition and prepared for the near future. Because with the war on the middle class and the moneyed class fearing soon to be unable to control the electorate. They figure that unrest will become all more common.

I don't think I'd be particularly happy if there was civil unrest in my neighborhood which included criminal damage to property and looting and if the local government did not send in whatever police or troops armed with whatever gear was required to get it to stop. I would suspect a majority of the law abiding residents of Ferguson probably feel the same way...although they may not be comfortable saying so in public.

Quite simply, if there is civil unrest, your job is to stop it.
Tactics weren't changed because a militarized response wasn't called for, it's because they had an alternative.

The town is 70 percent black, the local government and police force is overwhelmingly white. And the guy that has any sort of pull, Captain Johnson, had to be brought in from another jurisdiction because he has local roots. So I am not surprised that the local police are not being successful in convincing people to behave. They probably have no connection to the community. All politics are local.
Tammany Hall in New York was pretty bad, and Boss Tweed was corrupt. But those guys would help out those who they paid to vote for them when they got in trouble with the cops sometimes.

Actually your job is to prevent it in the first place.
I'm pretty sure that the reaction in Ferguson had a lot to do with a a failure on the part of the Police due to a history of overly oppressive tactics.
