Its not just about the kids, first of all. While the DHS is busy pulled in multiple directions to manage the kids, the border becomes that much more pourus for both unaccompanied minors and non-minors alike. Second, we can control access so that the human traffickers, coyotes or whatever the hell they're called are discouraged by the site of law enforcement and turn back.

East Germany/West Germany. I lived in Fulda, Germany for 3 years, 15 miles from the border fence. I was responsible for managing the construction of American defenses on our side of it. I've flew up and down this border on numerous occasions, once with SecDef Caspar Weinberger.

If we want that level of border security, we'd need to be willing to put Claymore mines on a double fence with a minefield between, along with a several mile exclusion zone with constant helicopter and foot patrols with shoot-on-sight orders.

Simply mumbling the constant refrain of "seal the border" is all the worthless, know-nothing GOP has. They sure don't have a clue. BTW, despite these fortifications, some East Germans still escaped. Also, our border with Mexico is over 8 times as long as the Inner-German border was.

Yes, and wasn't that a much smaller border? Our border with Mexico must be at least double that (I think).

It was about 250 miles, not 2,000 like ours.

Law enforcement on a 2,000 mile border through all kinds of terrain? Who gonna pay for it with what taxes (whose taxes)?

By the time you get that totalitarian, the only difference between Communist and Fascist is the particular lies included in the 'official state mythology.'

People laughed at the joke that the East Germans were 'Nazis without the charm" because there was some definite aptness to it.
