Rightwing War on the Disabled

http://www.latimes.com/business/hilt...09-column.html

"As we all know, the official animal of Washington, D.C., is the scapegoat. Today's example is Carolyn W. Colvin, the acting commissioner of Social Security.
Colvin recently was raked over the coals by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, the capital's chief scapegoat wrangler, for problems at Social Security that can largely be traced to its budget squeeze. In other words, to Congress."

Issa can't pass another opportunity to prove what an asshole he can be.

I know this is all bullshit politics. Republicans don't give a shit in Dick Cheney's hat for anything but trying to discredit the Obama administration these days.

That said...SSD and SSI were a bit of a specialty of mine back when I worked at the non-profit family service agency. I did a lot of advocating for clients who were legitimately disabled and being shafted by the people at the Department of Disability Determination. You pretty much had to have your head knocked off in a tsunami to get the determination in a reasonable amount of time, or at all for some. And the more disabled one is, particularly if the disability is mental health or intellectual impairment related (or both which makes the ordeal even worse), the more difficult the process is to negotiate...and I'm gonna say that it's designed purposefully so.

On the other hand...I've had a number of clients on SSD or SSI and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how TF they got it, or how TF they maintain it. So the system needs to weed out the scammers way, way better than it does.

That said...I don't buy for a minute that Issa, or any other Congressional Republican is really interested in promoting anything outside of it's Obama Derangement Syndrome.

I personally know of someone with MS who had to quit the job they had because of the inability to perform. Almost two years and waiting with a lawyer and doctors in their corner.

So this myth of an easy claim is just that. But the myth continues.

Plus just what is the reason for the two year waiting period to get Medicare? Just what is a person to do? Die?

Lucky for them they had a 401k, savings and also a Vet so not destitute or without healthcare. YET!!!

When my husband became disabled, we waited two years for his disability claim to be approved.

Years later, I worked on a project with the regional social security supervisor and she told me they deliberately make it a two year process to discourage scammers. I suspect that tactic hurts those who truly need it rather than discouraging many scammers.

I have a neighbor who managed to get disability on a sciatica claim. How, I don't know, having sciatica doesn't seem to have slowed him down a bit.

My sister has had five open heart surgeries and her claim was rejected.

The thing is these Repubs aren't looking to just catch cheaters, it's a grand scheme to further kill the safety net that we've all paid into our entire working lives.

Exactly. Ever tuned into Rush when he's admonishing his followers to resist the urge to feel empathy? Make sure you have a puke bag handy because it's some of the most sickeningly evil shit on the airwaves.....praise Jesus.
