The OP posted several links about stupid people who were idiots and had guns. Someone posted several links about responsible people who did something good with guns. The OP got upset about that. So its ok for the OP to post his links, but no one can post links that disagrees with his? I'm not saying that they cancel each other out.
I read the links. the ones the OP posted, were stupid people, doing stupid things with guns. The other links, yes you could say, Well if that bad guy didn't have a gun. Typically bad guys are criminals. Criminals don't obey the laws, that is why they are criminals. If guns were illegal, would that stop a criminal from being a criminal?
I'm not saying I have all the answers.
I'm thinking that, yes we need background checks. Mentally ill people, who gets to determine who is mentally ill? Am I mentally ill because I collect TV's, Washers, and dryers? Gun safety bi-annually for all gun owners. Like a certificate similiar to drivers license.
The uncle who shot and killed his nephew, because he didn't know it was loaded. The first thing I was taught about guns, Always treat every gun, as though it was loaded. Second thing I was taught, Don't point the gun, unless you intend on shooting. Whenever I handle a gun, I always check first to see if it is loaded.

I have attempted to explain to everybody several times what the issues were with hanging mass shootings on the "mentally ill". It appears you missed them. So, briefly, one more time...if you're so psychotic you don't really understand that what you're doing is wrong, you're mentally ill and not responsible. If you're just pissed off because the world hasn't treated you so well and you decide to get some payback by shooting 20 six year olds in the head, you have a problem of character, you are not mentally ill and you are responsible. A number of our mass shooters have been diagnosed with mental disorders, but as far as I know only a very few have believed that the devil or the god or the dog or jodie foster told them to do it. Outside of those, who were probably psychotic...one can be as wacky and weird as Ted Nugent and there's no reason to deny them their fucking gun rights under the SCOTUS' most recent pronouncement on guns. Because they have not been formally and legally identified as being a danger to self or others.

"Mentally ill" has become a nauseating Kelly Ayotte style right-wing talking point spewed at the daughter of a Sandy Hook murder victim. As an actual mental health concept, it means nothing in this discussion anymore. We don't need to change any gun laws, we don't need to re-interpret the 2nd Amendment, we don't need to do anything but get guns out of the hands of the "mentally ill". My ass.

PS - I qualified expert in Marine Corps boot in 1969, I know all about guns.

Uncle Wayne must be a mighty proud merchant of death these days.

Yes Agreed, all guns are loaded!

I think this is a pretty good thread.

I wouldn't call this responsible gun ownership, nor do I think Wayne or you would.

Nor do I think exploiting these children here on this form for political reasons is a responsible action.
