That shifts the focus of the discussion. We end up talking about whether President Obama was born in Kenya instead of our foreign policy regarding the African continent. We end up debating the very existence of climate change rather than mapping out strategies to reverse it. We waste our time arguing over Creationism vs. evolution when we should be thoughtfully discussing the role of religion in a technological age.

We are a nation of idiots.

I think media and its 24-hour news cycle is the principle culprit here. They have to fill all that time with something. There's also the blatant politicization of the news. There simply is no news reporting available here that isn't motivated by service to a political agenda.

This is a consequence of many things, and the Excrement In Fraudcasting echo chamber and it's follow-ons and the conspiracy sites Like Alex Jones, ect, poison the well of public discourse with agenda-directed dis-information and agit-prop. I don't understand how those wedded/addicted to these "sources" can claim intellectual independence.
