Hopefully we will be outta that shithole soon.(Thank you, Obama)
Whoever thought we could instill democratic principles in Afghanistan or Iraq was seriously delusional. That would be Gee Dubya by my lights. YMMV. Doesn't really matter in the long run tho. I've also read some Kipling, too.
Because Americans forget their history. Quick no looking in Wiki - who gave America deocracy?

Yep, and the same thing will happen in Afghanistan.

It's deja vu all over again.

It's pretty frustrating for an old Vietnam Vet like me to see this same shit, different day crap. We learned nothing.

LOL, Under an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in 2008, U.S. troops were due to end their mission in Iraq by the end of 2011

Nice try Bob...

But hey it's nice to see Al Qaeda “on the run”, “decimated”, and “on the path to defeat”

That is not the case.

In the case of Iraq, it wasn't the American public hankering for a fight. It was Dubya, Cheney, et al. Those opposed to our intervention in Iraq were labelled anti-American. Freedom fries, anyone?

Half-true. The neocon's fantasies were the genesis of the thing. But it was no great trick to bring the masses along. We were in a mood to do big assertive stuff. It made no sense and was also evil, but the big majority of folks just didn't care.

One must conclude that "democracy" works poorly sometimes.

Thanks for making that point, Finn. Iraq was absolutely no threat to the US and had played no part in 9/11. A little diplomacy could have actually made Iraq an ally in that part of the world, instead of the cause of US bankruptcy.

I'm always reminded of the quote from Michael Clayton, when I think of Saddam:

I'm not the guy you kill. I'm the guy you buy! Are you so fucking blind that you don't even see what I am? I'm your easiest problem and you're gonna kill me?

Yeah a guy down the road a couple of miles has this really long white picket fence. After 9/11 he painted groups of four pickets alternating red and blue leaving four white pickets in between. Then he stuck up a hand painted sign that said 'these colors don't run'. Gonna take a hell of lot of undercoat to cover that red and blue. Sign disppeared about three months later.
