I think the Tet Offensive and Nixon going into Cambodia soured the United States on the war....

Did Nixon institute the lottery system for the draft?
Anyone remember?

It wasn't GOP policies that got us into Vietnam

yeah but you are forgetting that the John Foster Dulles view of rolling back Communism and the policy of Containment was both bi-partisan and believed as gospel my many Americans.

Right. But, they were viewed as 'the establishment' by those favoring the 'anti establishment' movement.

I think the gap between the elected republican politicians and the counter culture at the time is more a result of the mainstream lagging behind the movement.

It wasn't until upper middle class and middle class kids started to get drafted into the Vietnam war that the 'older generation' (parents) started to question the policies of republicans in office.
Hello Barbara, nice to meet you!

This thread offers such a lot of material now, it is not easy for me to arrange all those ideas. Anyway - thanks again community!

Agreed, for many years afterwards as well.

Are you so sure about that? I know of at least one conspiracy theory that ties the JFK assassination to rightwing hawks displeased with Kennedys soft stance on Vietnam. (One variation of this theory even puts a CIA agent named G. H. W. Bush on the grassy knoll.)

Yes, but was it not a favored chant of the Anti-War, Anti-Establishment crowd; "Hey, Hey LBJ! How many kids did you kill today?"

Last I checked LBJ was a Democrat.
