When I was growing up in rural NE Washington, the Confederate flag was just a symbol for rednecks. All the "ritters & cowboys" had them in their back windows and belt buckles. I really don't think the 1969 Charger "General Lee" was ever considered a slave-mobile.

Whether or not the civil war was caused by slavery, the people of the south still viewed the confederate flag as a symbol of their heritage. Although that included slaves, it also encompassed many other aspects of their lives.

Sorry, it's not that recent:

He was the President of the University of Alabama when they fielded their first football team in ~1895.

I went there, as did both of my sons (all of us are civil engineers). I went there both because it's a really good engineering school and it's tucked away in a very beautiful spot in the Allegheny mountains. Back then (1971), I was very much a get-back-to-nature hippie type fond of camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, rafting, caving, etc. VT offers all of that in spades. The mountains, woods, rivers and caves near Blacksburg are some of the very nicest anywhere in the East.

After freshman year in the dorm, my buddies and I rented a country farmhouse with 120 acres on a bluff above the New River. Our back property line was a trout stream and the property was full of grouse, rabbit, squirrel and deer. We pretty much lived on game and fish. That area is still one of my absolute favorite places on the globe.

Interesting. I am gonna make it a point to get down there where my daughter plays VT in Blacksburg, should be next year. I was one of those city hippies. Getting back to nature was way important to me as well but a hike in the woods once a month was very aggressive "getting back" for a city kid.
I sleep in the woods exactly 3 nights my whole life and one of those times I slept in the car.

Having had an in-person Finnbow sighting, I'd say that's pretty close.

We had a pic thread a while back, might be a good time to update it.

I'll see if I can fish out the thread and we can see how fat and grey each other has gotten since we last posted.
