I highly advise having it examined by a competent mechanic before shelling out any money.

And I do mean highly advise.

Thanks for all the help on my son's truck.

It's a 1998 Chevy S10 half ton...... Brown truck.

He is calling around to places today. So far, it hasn't been very promising. Usually he works on his truck himself, but I guess because its a half ton, there is a part that he might have a hard time finding.
Fortunately, his boss has loaned him a company truck so he can get to and from work til he gets this fixed. He just started this job after being unemployed for a long time and I don't want him to lose this job!!!

You're in luck, since they only made a million of 'em.

Parts should be cheap and easy to find.

If it is the differential in the axle housing (rear end), I'd take Rob's advice and buy another complete unit at a junk yard. Not just anyone can do the setup on the gears.

Pretty much any shade tree mechanic can swap the whole unit, bleed the brakes, and have it up and running in a half a day...drinking beer the whole time.

I would, that's how my S-10 is currently set up, and the 4.6 shouldn't worry too much about the low idle, but it's my luxoliner 'good' car How could I possibly live without automatic climate control? I'd have to start tucking in my pinkie while sipping tea! The horror.

Just good natured funning I kid the SO about cars too.

Barbara if he knows cars it might not be that bad. S-10s are common and even worst case it's the rear a used one shouldn't be far away. Chas is right though.

He and his buddies are great shade tree mechanics!! Sounds like luck is on my side!

If all I have to do is buy the beer, that's a good deal!

What is it doing? Don't spend alot on parts, these are plentiful and parts are cheap. I see complete rear ends with good brakes still on them for about 100-150.00 on Craigslist. They can go out, though not often. My wife had an 01 S10 that lost a rear, the cross pin broke in half right after she bought it from the previous owner that spun one tire in the snow for about 20 minutes solid like a fool thinking it would melt it's way to the pavement and get him up the hill. One wheel spinning while the other is sitting still is very hard on the cross pin. That being said, we still have 2 1994's and a 1999 that have been darn good.. but they've never been in the hands of a fool.

And I'd like to add that it isn't hard to swap out a whole unit in these. I've worked in shops and know what the bosses like to charge,.. but it's only about a 35 minute job with a lift, and I swap them out on the ground in just under an hour without an overhead lift laying in gravel.
