Essentially, I pay my own healthcare. We are a small firm - four active partners. Two of the partners are now on medicare, and we pay the premiums, but two of us plus the secretary have family coverage. I can't remember the last time I received a check larger than the one we write to the insurance company each month. I'm quite certain that the balance will weigh even more heavily in favor of the insurance company when we come up for renewal again this year. Each time it comes up for renewal, we increase the co-pays or reduce coverage - not to save money but to alleviate the rate increase. Because of the health issues some of us have had, we have no way to find anyone to bid against our current carrier. When I see half of my billed hours going to pay the healthcare nut, plus the two-hundred or so more each month that we pay for prescriptions and doctor visits, I wonder whether I am working for me or for the insurance company. By the way, does anyone have directions to the tea party convention.
Regards,
D-Ray

Correct me if I'm wrong D-Ray, but if I find myself in need of your services I end up paying more than I would if those costs weren't so high. It's an pitch they didn't make well- small businesses that compete internationally are at a huge disadvantage when they have to try to do a job for the same cost as a company in a country with universal health care.

Fellers, fellers...Come on. It AIN'T the end of the world. I have a strong feelin' the sun will come up this morning. So this one didn't work-Fine. Now we all need to sit down again, & try a little harder to come up w/something that WILL work, & be acceptable to everyone. I think we all know that something needs to be done-its just that the PERCEPTION of this plan & what it entailed just had too many people spooked. Politicians also need to be reminded every now & then that THEY work for US-not the other way around, & last night was a gentle nudge in that direction.

But at least for now I still have it and it's still reasonable enough that I can afford it easily. But I'm pretty lucky. Unfortunately, I have this horrible trait they call empathy. I'm distressed for *others* who are not as lucky as I am. This is a trait our Republican friends are not burdened with.

Ed, please stop pigeon holing us all in the same group. Some of us care more then you may think.
The plan is not dead. The usual back room politics will take place and bribes will be thrown about at a record pace, I'm sure, to ensure this flawed to hell plan, still has a chance.
If it does not succeed its one mans fault and one man only. We know who that is. Obama.
IMO Reid and some other morons screwed it worse by taking out the single payer. It could have brought more support on board.
Lastly the backroom secrecy that's taken place with this since day one has done more harm then good. Involve the people. Make it clearly and easily written and get the people behind you. Don't write it like tax code, that even the IRS does not understand.

'an how much of haiti relief donations from those same 'grand' people wouldn't get donated if not for a tax deduction?
(From post #3)
How does it make sense to give away X number of dollars so that you can deduct a small percentage of X from your taxes?

"Grr. I just hate how Republicans are all 100% identical and can move as if with one brain, which, when you think about it is pretty accurate. But Democrats are a diverse and well meaning bunch. That's a great thing, but our system isn't set up for thought and debate. It's set up for cut-throat, ruthless, take no prisoners battle. Republicans were born for that. Democrats, not so much."
You know, it's funny. If you switch the words "Democrats" and "Republicans" in this statement it would describe how I feel! Two different witnesses... two different stories.

The Canadian Single Payer Plan, I know because I lived there for 53 years. Unfortunately all Americans ever hear about it is the bullshit put out by the insurance an drug companies. Look in any issue of any major magazine, you will see three and four page ads for some "Miracle" drug (the miracle being if it does not kill you). Figure out what that spread cost, then tell yourself that of course the magazine will print the truth about single payer. If you do believe that we are having a special on the Bay Bridge this week.
