Probably the biggest difference was that slaves were expensive, and much like livestock needed a certain amount of care.

Now if some damned Irishman fell over dead at the loom, it was no big deal. Just have his replacement drag his cadaver to the street before he went on the clock.

As far as that goes, wasn't Ben Franklin an indentured servant who ran before his account was settled?

Trying to view the 1700's & 1800's through a 21st century prism doesn't work that well. The colors don't always come out as accurate as they should.

Can't say I have. But I did once have a coworker who told me that the slave shacks still stood out behind the family farmhouse. Said his forebearers maintained them as "a reminder of better times". He seemed to be a touch disgusted by it, but obviously everyone from his Dad on back didn't feel the same way.

See, slavery is like skeletons in the family closet. Everyone knows the truth, but we try not to talk about it because some of us have a billion "reasons" and excuses to dance all around it. The truth and all those light skinned folks runnin' around the old family homestead are just too much for a "Gentleman" to bear. The rest of us are too tired of their bullshit to argue with'em, so we let it slide. Straight up slavery is behind us now, so there really isn't much point to it.

However, it certainly does appear that some among us long for the days of cheap, compliant labor to scowl at from atop their high horses.

"...for lack of a better phrase, an employee is actually just a piece of equipment.". Remember that? I'm pretty sure I read it here.

Hell if it comes to that I was an indentured servant when I came down here on an H1B visa. Marrying Florence changed that and got me a green card. Why do you think Bill Gates and his buddies want unlimited H1Bs. There are plenty of citizens here who can do the work, they just want to be paid what they are worth.
