No she is from the other main island where Manila is ...Luzon. I met her while on TAD (temporary active duty) to Subic Bay in 1991...there was a huge US Navy base there.

Luzon is mostly safe...and a wonderful place to visit. Mindanao on the other hand can be dangerous for Americans (and others not from the Philippines) primarily because of the always in progress Muslim insurgency and a high incidence of kidnapping. The kidnapping is primarily for monetary gain. So I would not recommend Mindanao unless you strictly stay in large cities and like to live dangerously. In the Philippines a white person is automatically assumed to be very wealthy (even if you are a poor American) and thus can be a target.

I have never had a problem in Luzon however. The food is very tasty and inexpensive, and public transportation is also very very inexpensive by Western standards. Hotels can be very reasonable too.

As far as headhunting goes that even took place on Luzon also...but not anymore ....

I've always wondered what the dominant language in the Philippines is. Is Tagalog what most people speak or has either Spanish or English supplanted it?

It is Tagalog however the official government language is English and from what I understand instruction in university is English.

However, each of the regions have provincial dialects. My wife speaks Tagalog and the language of her home province, which is Pampanga.
So it is possible for people from different provinces to speak in a totally different language and not understand each other. That is when they will use
Tagalog.

Imagine not be able to speak to someone from a different part of the US because of the dialect...
