If you group Texas, Oklahoma and Tennessee, which aggregate about the same total of electoral votes as California, you have just about a wash in the popular vote. Obama took 26 states, including some of the more populous states. I don't think you can point to one state and say that it provided all of the margin.

One needs to also remember that NY, NJ, and CT (all Dem states) likely had low turnout due to the storm. The popular vote totals could have been worse for the GOP.

They did and, doubtless, you're right. New Jerseyans (ites?) still have today to get their email ballots in so we still don't have hard numbers there.

My dad used to say, CA's too powerful, it should be cut into north and south CA.

The have the votes because they have the population, buy they still only get two Senators, just like Wyoming and Rhode Island.

Now split it in two and they would have four Senators - be careful what you wish for.
