Marshal Petain, a hero of the First War and
hardly a "Leftist", was the leader of the Vichy government. The Vichy routinely rounded up Jews, Communists, Soshulists and other "undesirables" and turned them over to the Nazis.
French Communists, benefiting from the experience many had in the Spanish civil War, were a huge and important part of the "Maquis" (French Resistance). They captured and shot any Vichy official they could lay their hands on.
Before the war the French Communist Party became a signatory to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviets and the Nazis. This occurred in 1939, before even a shot was fired between France and Germany so it was irrelevant to the formation of the Vichy government. Also, it was a show of solidarity with the Russian Communist Party,
not a capitulation to the Nazis (but I suspect that this is what you're going for, Pete).
