I think the issue about his tax returns is that due to the convoluted mess that it is tax code, the Dems could make plenty of hay with them regardless of what story the returns actually tell. He knows that they could easily be used to foment resentment/anger among the working class who don't have access to such tax breaks. Without the white working class, the Romney base would wither. Simple, really. This is not a defense for him not releasing, but my view of his motivation for not doing so.
