Also, Michigan has been a net "donor" state: with tax payers paying our more in Federal tax dollars than are returned to the state by Federal spending or tax credits. Fairly recently we ranked 47th out of 50 states for a 20 year period. What's "right" with that picture?
By the way, historically the top "recipients" are typically Washington DC, Virginia and MD. Go figure.

Yeah, Virgina---Red State. Are you tired of getting ripped off by Republicans yet? BTW, Thanks!

That Obama is more hammered I disagree. Although you get the ugly racial stuff on top of the jewloving comments, the hitler comments, etc.
But then I've been discussing politics online for quite some time.

Since when is D.C. a state Whell? I must've missed this momentous occassion.
There are 48 others states besides Md. & Va. which are blue and red respectively. Where are your stats for the rest? More simpleminded false equivalence? I'm sure you'll pout and claim that you're not doing my homework for me but it is you that offers up the D.C. (not a state) Md. Va. example to refute someone else's assertion that it is your red states that suck more at the public teat than the blue states. Comment?

The title of the report is "Federal Spending Received Per Dollar of Taxes Paid by State, 2005" but I guess, like the August 6th PDB "Bin Laden Determined To Strike In U.S.", it doesn't really mean what it says it means.
What it shows is federal taxes paid on a per-state basis versus federal dollars received. In other words, to take New Mexico, the first/worst on the list, they receive $2.03 from the Feds for every dollar paid in federal taxes. By comparison, the states you accuse of being the "historically" the worst are as follows:
Maryland, 18th, receives $1.30 for every dollar it contributes and Virginia, 10th, receives $1.51 for every dollar of federal tax. DC receives a ton, $5.55, but that's a special case since it's a federal district, a creature of government, and has no industrial tax base to speak of.
And... my adopted state of California, 43rd, receives a mere $0.78 for every dollar of taxes we pay in.
Please read again, genius

So when did Michigan suffer anything like what the traditionally exposed states like the, let me guess, the whole Gulf coast, Florida, all of tornado alley, California (lots o shakey ground) Alaska, Texas (all over), Colorado (in the last few days) ? On and on I could go but I think you get the point. Why do you stop at 20 years? Maybe prior to 20 years Michigan got too much snow?
I'm sorry but it's kinda obvious to me that false equivalence is your doctrine du jour, Whell. Maybe you are just myopic and need a new prescription?

Oh, and though I don't actually know, I strongly suspect that a lot of the federal dollars going to Virginia and Maryland are related to the huge government presence, both civilian and military, in those two states, a presence which requires immense federal spending and generates no tax revenue. I've lived in both places and, unless you have, you can't begin to understand the huge presence the federal government has there.
