Yes, this is the normal response. I would suggest that this kid trying to turn the situation from the stalked to the stalker is just as natural. Especially for a teen from the hood.

The police and their dispatchers are trained to be very careful and very precise in their wording. If they wanted him to go home they would have said "go back to your residence". They were prompting Zimmerman- "just let us know if he does anything else", "which way is he running", etc.

Not quite accurate.

Police and dispatchers are trained to assess situations and, if possible, deescalate potentially volatile instances.

I'd bet the dispatcher was talking Zimmerman down (I've done similar an untold number of times) via the use of "we don't need you to do that."

It's very similar to:

1. I appreciate your time.
2. Oh, that's quite alright.
3. I've seen enough.
4. Don't call us, we'll call you.

THINK. To Zimmerman he was already at his residence. Questioning that just makes things worse.

There's NO WAY a dispatcher would use the verbiage you indicate.

Try this.

You go to the grocery store at night in the rain. You come out and a big black man follows you. You become uncomfortable and quicken the pace confirming that you are somehow targeted.

You decide not to bring this threat back to your house where family may become endangered so you go around a corner and stop to get the drop on the big black man. You assault him as a defense given the implied threat.

He manages to pull a gun and kill you. (thereby bring the threat to fulfillment)

Do you think this black man should be free to repeat this behavior on your son next year?
