Personally, I think the slaves were no more than a tool...after all Lincoln freed them in the South where he had no jurisdiction at the time, and left them in chains in the North where he had.
It was a political power struggle between two opposing factions, using slavery for the catalyst. Much as the cities and rural areas are engaged in now, only we don't have a neat dividing line such as the Mason Dixon.
And I'm also of the belief that slavery would have died a natural death in the South, much like everywhere else other than Africa, with the advent of the mechanical age.
And while I'm expanding on speculation, I suspect that the black race would have been better served than to be used for political purposes during Resconstruction as the means to enforce further control on the already disenfranchised South.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending slavery, far from it.
But if someone were to enforce their will on you to the point of shoving it up your ass sideways like this was handled, you'd have your great, great, great grandkids, teaching their grandkids, to hate their guts until the end of time.
The blacks were simply caught in the crossfire, and they're still there.
I'm not saying I'm right, simply offering an opposing viewpoint.
