Just by the numbers worldwide the answer is yes. Also, is it possible to be a Muslim and not extreme? The only upside is that they tend to kill more fellow Muslims than non-Muslims. Moreover, this is not a recent phenomena, but goes back to the very foundation of Islam.

I don't think it's possible to understand the Muslim mind through the perspective of Western Judeo-Christian values; the goals, motivations, and politics are entirely different.
