This is the main reason why some GOP leaders are not only distancing themselves from Trump, but vocally opposing him. For some, this may be too late and these people need to be targeted.

Agreed. I think the polls show that. If she was a stellar candidate, the margins between her and Trump would be far greater.
I also think the control will depend on how the GOP spends its last few weeks. Ryan started with a separation from Trump. I think some carefully worded ads could go a very long ways in gaining support from the GOP public,
Something like
"Trump has clearly demonstrated personal values we find appalling. However, our core beliefs are solid. We ask that you help us put the GOP in charge of the house and the senate. Doing so will effectively defeat Hillary. Please vote for your republican candidate."
If they would run ads something like this, they would get a lot of votes.
