Agree with first sentence, and with much else you say. But the problem is, the
confronting you're talking about risks a big increase in the "social and political turmoil." I can think of nothing more likely to actually get Donald Trump as president than a big push for "gun removal."
I'm not very keen on 'confronting,' in general. It stokes up the opposition.
