Hmmm.... Why would Sheriff Plummer be contacting DoJ? Could it be that, in the process of investigating the texts, he unearthed evidence that one or both of the fired officers had violated someone's civil rights?

It sounds like Sheriff Plummer has handled this situation very well indeed. In a lot of departments the first response would be to try to sweep everything under the rug as we saw in Seattle recently.
