That's because it is also known as the "Reddest of the Red States". So, despite what you see right in front of you, Mississippi is doing great. Only Dem infested shitholes like Detroit have problems. At least that's what the rightwing media memo says.
Detroit is the Benghazi of domestic economics when it comes to the conservative mindset. It's a squirrel. A distractor. Point out what a hell hole of poverty and racial hatred Mississippi is and they scream "DETROIT!".
The point that is overlooked is that Detroit and Mississippi have the same problem; Insatiably greedy and selfish rich people who leave a scorched earth behind them if they don't get their way. The only difference is they stayed in Mississippi and managed to oppress everyone there to their satisfaction. The peasants in Detroit successfully rebelled for a while, before the bastards threw a tantrum and laid them all off. Two different results, stemming from the same root cause, neither of them good for anyone but the handful at the top.
Always remember, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin were all once Republican strongholds, before people tired of their slave driving bullshit that is. Mississippi was Democratic until the Democratic Party turned on them in the 1960s. Then they became Republicans.....but make no mistakes, Dem or Rep, with those guys it's just a name, their ideology hasn't changed since the 1850s. They just go with whoever seems more tolerant of their crap at the moment, for the sake of getting their votes.
Atwater knew this and exploited it. So did Nixon.
And, here we are.
