When I was growing up in rural NE Washington, the Confederate flag was just a symbol for rednecks. All the "ritters & cowboys" had them in their back windows and belt buckles. I really don't think the 1969 Charger "General Lee" was ever considered a slave-mobile.
Whether or not the civil war was caused by slavery, the people of the south still viewed the confederate flag as a symbol of their heritage. Although that included slaves, it also encompassed many other aspects of their lives.
