Any thoughts about why that may be?

Perhaps they knew what to expect?
They knew that what was going down was trouble, and they wanted to keep out of it. Saying more than that is pure speculation. Then the violence happens suddenly, and we don't see the reaction to that, which has not had time to happen when the video ends. Apparently one girl raised some level of fuss after that, and got arrested also.

You are absolutely right about that. Unfortunately, there is a lot of that running through this thread.

I think we need to wait until the investigations are complete and then react.

That's what I'm saying as well. If I seem a bit invested in this...I watched the blonde deal with this bullshit behavior for 15 years in a west side Chicago school. Luckily, back in those days most of the teachers had the support of most of the parents who had a kid with behavior problems and who knew first hand what a pain in the ass their kid was. "If my kid acts up, whip his (or her) ass.", were the instructions from the majority of those parents. The kids knew it and it was very rare that officer Friendly was required to drag a kid out of the classroom for dissing their teacher. And I'll tell you Dave, there were several teachers...all of them were black...who laid some serious ass whipping on kids on a regular basis.

All info I got on this incident - by ntv, part of CNN - is the brutal scene and that the cop has been dismissed. The scene is disgusting and the quality and quantity of physical violence is unacceptable. But:

The friend of my sister is a teacher in a vocational school. A lot of his students are no angels, but damned little bastards. He is suffering from a psycholgical burnout now and tries to achieve an early retirement.

OK, those that have experience or second-hand experience dealing with 'damned little bastards' have some sympathy with the adults in this case. Understandable enough, until the desk flips over and the kid is then thrown across the room. The level of violence is dangerous, it's not over the line, it's WAY over the line.

That's a way of saying "I don't feel good about condemning the cop."

I'm fine with condemning the cop. Unless a kid is doing violence, you can't throw them around like that. There's an unsubstantiated report of a broken bone. May be untrue but it certainly wouldn't be surprising.

There is something wrong if an adult "teaches" a kid violence, even if the kid acts like a turd. A parent, a teacher, a cop has (to learn) to cope with such a difficult challenge without using physical violence.

Having grown up it a time when the ""Board of Education"" also meant an oak paddle with some holes drilled into it in the hands of the gym or shop teacher. Just a fact one and all knew was the punishment dealt out.

A brutal as a few licks were one knew when your Father found out it would be even worse. So you would try to keep from this happening if smart.

I personally see only the end of this incident, agree that the student was given the opportunity to leave peacefully, without any physical force. So as ugly as it looks and painful to watch I see it as her fault.

I suppose I should keep such surmises to myself. Sorry.

But 'let's wait for the investigation' is sometimes the cry of those who basically want some trouble swept under the rug.
