Most scientists are just stating what they find. Sure, there is money in it for them, but more often than not there isn't a great deal of money. Most of them can't get away with just shooting shit out there to convince people that they are right, because they've got millions of other scientists around the world shooting holes in or verifying their hypothesis.
In short, when a scientist makes a claim it's usually backed by research, experiment and other scientists.
When a clergy-jerk makes a statement it can't be verified, is usually ridiculous and has an ulterior motive. I wouldn't trust a preacher to speak on the colour of shit.
