I went there, as did both of my sons (all of us are civil engineers). I went there both because it's a really good engineering school and it's tucked away in a very beautiful spot in the Allegheny mountains. Back then (1971), I was very much a get-back-to-nature hippie type fond of camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, rafting, caving, etc. VT offers all of that in spades. The mountains, woods, rivers and caves near Blacksburg are some of the very nicest anywhere in the East.
After freshman year in the dorm, my buddies and I rented a country farmhouse with 120 acres on a bluff above the New River. Our back property line was a trout stream and the property was full of grouse, rabbit, squirrel and deer. We pretty much lived on game and fish. That area is still one of my absolute favorite places on the globe.
