The Post's take on it.

Repubbies are congenitally unable to do their jobs. :p

Federal employees won't be paid right before the Christmas holidays. So much for the right's newfound love for the working class.

I'll bet it coulda been the cleanest spending bill ever, and they'd have trashed it just to throw some final dirt on Biden on his way out the door. That way they can forever mock him with "The last shutdown was on HIS watch"

as if there won't be more of this nonsense to come in the future......

Rajoo 12-19-2024 06:01 AM

Incidentally, this rejection of the CR has established that Musk is indeed Trump's co-president, perhaps even more.

Johnson has a huge new problem: Elon Musk

Quote:

Speaker Mike Johnson has a massive new headache as he races to stop a holiday government shutdown — and his name is Elon Musk.

The tech scion and mega-ally of President-elect Donald Trump took to his social platform X on Wednesday to slam a short-term funding bill Johnson backed, criticizing the 1,547-page continuing resolution for its numerous unrelated spending measures — including a raise for lawmakers — and calling it “criminal,” “unconscionable” and a “crime against the American people.”

It started at 4:15 a.m. ET, when Musk posted on X “this bill should not pass.”
President Elon Musk will be inaugurated on January 20th 2015, but Donald Trump will be standing in for him.

Donald Trump Sides With Elon Musk Against Mike Johnson Over Spending Bill

Quote:

President-elect Donald Trump sided with Elon Musk in his opposition to House Speaker Mike Johnson's bill to temporarily fund the government as Congress scrambles to pass a spending bill with only two days before the deadline to avoid a shutdown.

Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance criticized the bill in a statement posted to Vance's X (formerly Twitter) account Wednesday afternoon.

"Republicans must GET SMART and TOUGH. If Democrats threaten to shut down the government unless we give them everything they want, then CALL THEIR BLUFF. It is Schumer and Biden who are holding up aid to our farmers and disaster relief," they wrote.

Was hoping that four more years of utter chaos and incompetence would start on Jan 20th. Sadly, it's already begun. Merry Christmas!

Since trump has his "mandate" they'll be tasked to take one for the team. Besides, Maggers believe government workers are all worthless layabouts anyway. Divide and conquer.

Add every active duty servicemen and women to those who'll get a lump of coal in their stockings hung by the chimney with care. Thanks Presidente Muskmelon and his first chump Trump.

Big cuts to pediatric cancer research amongst the blows in this endeavor by President Muskmelon.

Just in.

Quote:

By a vote of 366-34 with one lawmaker voting present, the House has overwhelmingly passed a bill that averts a government shutdown hours before the government runs out of funding. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said earlier Friday that the new spending plan does not include President-elect Donald Trump’s demand to suspend the debt limit. The legislation would extend current fiscal levels until mid-March, provide $110 billion in relief to help natural-disaster survivors and aid farmers, and grant an extension for the farm bill, which must be reauthorized. The bill has gone to the Senate.
So looks like the GOP House members mustered some courage and say FU to Trump, or was it Musk who wanted a shut down so badly. Easier to fire them if they are already on furlough?

I wish the Senate would put back into this bill all the social welfare stuff and then send it back to moronic House leadership for negotiation in the regular order.

The democrats have spent countless hours bargaining in good faith for months only to have the rug pulled out at the last moment. Fuck them. Let the government shut down on the GOPs watch in the House for bargaining in bad faith.

A little Pyrrhic victory in that Schumer gave control of the RFK stadium and surrounding land to the DC government for 99 years. Not a penny for pediatric cancer research or any of the other stuff.

A drop the mic moment if ever there was one.....

Noogies 12-21-2024 05:17 PM

Regardless, all this stuff will resurface in a couple of months or so. Better get used to it.

Rajoo 12-21-2024 05:36 PM

I am quite satisfied with the passage of the CR so the government did not shut down. This denies Trusks a victory, they both really wanted to shut down the government for their own nefarious purposes. Besides if Biden were to hand over a non functioning government, they would have effectively and convincingly blamed this on Biden. Don't forget, Musk was able to convince the MAGAts that the House members were going to get a 40% pay raise when it was less than 4%.

As for the "Christmas Tree Ornaments" in the CR, if they are worthwhile, they will be brought up separately like the stadium in DC instead of hiding them in an omnibus bill, which no one gets to read before they vote.

Another reason is that once the new House is sworn in on the 3rd, no bills can pass until they elect a speaker. Any bets on how many rounds this will go and who the speaker will be? The government would have shut down for a long time if their previous speaker speaker election is any indication.

In the end the Fed workers will be paid, so this amounts to a free vacation while the economy tanks affecting all of us.

Tell me something I don't know, Noogs. This CR (continuing resolution) funds things until March.

Whomever ends up being the Speaker will still need Democratic House votes in March to keep the doors open and the lights on.

This crapola started with Newt Gingrich back in the 90's.

It's a helluva way to govern and it's mostly chickenshit Repubs pulling this stuff. They can always be counted on to argue in bad faith as they've demonstrated once again.

Rajoo 12-21-2024 09:58 PM

Look at the bright side Bob, a Speaker may not be elected until March.
Or the Dems could break tradition and vote for a Speaker that the Repubs do not want.

donquixote99 12-22-2024 09:20 AM

The Dems should support a 'moderate Republican' for speaker. Someone who's attractive enough to get bipartisan support. This isn't a move to make right away, but it might work once even the R's are sick of thrashing around without a winner.

There are enough wingnuts/MAGAt's to prevent that from being successful.

Exactly. If word gets out that the Democrats will support a moderate candidate for Speaker, the wingnuts will go out of their way to nominate flame throwers, while everyone knows Gym covets the job like McCarthy did.

Are there? It would only take a few Republicans to vote with the Democrats, and you have a majority. And the more jump on, the safer they all are. Safety in numbers. We could call it a 'government of national unity.' Just had a big bipartisan vote for the CR bill. Build on this succcess!

I'm not saying I wouldn't like it, but I just don't see it happening. They'd rather have another 15-vote shit show than put a moderate as Speaker. For example, they're talking Jim Jordan for the next speaker, which may not be a bad thing for Democrats. He's so dishonest and incompetent that most of his initiatives will be DOA.

Rajoo 12-22-2024 01:23 PM

That will do it, three out of control morons running our government; Musk, Trusk and Jordan.
