It worked out far better than nominating any of the clown posse the GOP put forward in 2012, with the exception of Jon Huntsman. Santorum, Cain, Bachmann, etc. would likely been swept away in an epic wave.

McCain's loss probably had more to do with a Dubya hangover and his sudden embrace of right wing lunacy, including his selection of the brain-dead Teabagger Queen as his running mate.
