I live a mile from the ocean - beach property here out of my range, as well as any decent parcels on one of the tidal estuaries.
I like the mountains - almost moved to Colorado, but I have always lived near the ocean - I would miss it.
I will attempt to earn more money.

We are 400 feet above sea level but if we were to move it would be north to the Canadian Maritimes.

I did. It's why I moved back to Maryland and why, when I moved again, it was to another coastal state.

I get it.
I was born and raised in Pinellas County Florida.
There's something about being near salt water that gets inside you.

Our place in the Indiana Dunes is a block from the south shore of Lake Michigan. The lakefront properties are out of the average family's reach here as well. I would prefer the salt air as well, but this will do in a pinch. And...the water temperature is so...invigorating.

I was born in Savannah, GA and do remember living on the beach. But was small when dad was transfered to Atlanta. About all I remember about the beach was wind and water far as I could see. I remember standing in the window watching a seagull flap his wings hard as he could but the wind was blowing him backwards through the air. And my mom grabbing me from the window saying something could hit me there.
Atlanta area traffic was so bad, dad bought a chunk of land in TN after looking very carefully for years. He said we were moving where there'd be no more traffic to deal with for a hundred years. He was pretty much right. Now when I leave my neck of the woods I feel lost if I don't see hills. Went to Dallas TX a couple times, stayed 3 months working a temp job back in the 80's and couldn't wait to get back to our hills. Oh, I damn near died when I came home that September. I know that in TX the temps read hot, but after 3 months there I almost melted here when I came back to TN in Sept. Humidity is much different here.
Right now my sister inlaw just returned from Gulf Shores AL and said our humid heat is killing her here after being down by the ocean. She said it was very pleasant feeling down there.

Another thing I'd like to add about Middle, TN. In Middle, TN ( more so than the rest of the state ) the conditions are ''just right'' for the most dense vegetation AND Chiggers aka Red Bugs. When folks first move here, two things bother them right away. 1, they discover they have allergies that never bothered them before. And 2, they get eat up horribly bad by something and after a couple nights unable to sleep do to chronic itching they go to the doctor thinking something is wrong and the doctor tells them ''oh, it's just Chigger bites.'' Some that move here end up having to move somewhere else because allergies are to bad.

Good luck with that, some folks come close but not for everyone or sustainable on a large scale.

Smokey Mountain Tennessee has always been a fave area, but I need the intellectual nurturing of a free-thinking progressive environment to thrive. I understand there some such enclave areas there.
