We're wealthier than ever, and we have better stuff. Nevertheless, it seems like capitalism can't catch a break these days. There's a steady drumbeat of economic nostalgia on both the political right and left that cherry-picks statistics to make the argument that Americans were better off 20, 40, or even 70 years ago. And when presented with evidence that many of the things Americans like to buy are getting cheaper, that's somehow a problem too.

There will always be those who want to declare "Bah, humbug!" during the holiday season. But prosperity is the gift that keeps on giving.

Donald was absolutely right when he told Wolf Blitzer in 2004: “I’ve been around for a long time and it just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans.”

That’s right. Trump said out loud the same thing that Hillary Clinton has asserted—and top academics and journalists have confirmed. The same thing I’ve been compiling cold, hard government data on since 1980: By crucial metrics like GDP, job creation, business investment and avoiding recessions, the economy does a lot better with Democrats in the White House than with Republicans. Just one eye-opening example: Nine of the last 10 recessions have been under Republicans.

Even if the Fed rate is not the reason that approval ratings are higher, a booming economy (which can be initiated by periods with low interest rates) generally leads to more support. While it may not necessarily be true that people vote with only the economy in mind, in the future, to gain more voters, the data shows it may prove beneficial for candidates to promise a low interest rate, as they will garner support from their voting constituents.

The S&P 500 (^GSPC) hovered near an all-time closing high of 4,796.56 for the second straight day. The major average popped about 0.2% at the open, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) rose more than 0.1%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) paced gains, adding just more than 0.2%.

The Nasdaq has now gained more than 44% this year. If that holds, it would be the major average's best year since 2003.

Early in 2023, Donald Trump clearly thought he had a winning issue with stocks.

A regular part of his message was to claim President Biden was market poison, with the former president vigorously comparing the down year of 2022 to the Great Depression of 1929.

"Does anyone have a 401(k)? Raise your hand if you're happy with it," he asked of a crowd in Davenport, Iowa, back in March. "They were happy when I was running this country," he added.

But the market has been on a tear since then, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) reaching a new all-time record in December and the S&P 500 (^GSPC) now on the cusp of a similar milestone.
